Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed optimism about President-elect Donald Trump’s commitment to resolving the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Speaking after their recent meeting in Paris, Zelenskyy lauded Trump’s “strong resolve” and decisiveness, emphasizing the need for global unity to defeat Moscow’s aggression.

Zelenskyy’s remarks followed a meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral. The Ukrainian leader described their conversation as “very productive” and expressed “deep gratitude” for Trump’s determination to address the war. Zelensky said, “I appreciate President Trump’s decisiveness, and it is exactly what can help.”

In a series of public statements, Zelenskyy underscored his belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin fears Trump more than any other leader, apart from China. He added, “We know that America has the capacity to accomplish remarkable things—things that others have not been able to achieve… Putin fears only [Trump] and, perhaps, China. And that’s the truth—only decisiveness can bring this war to a just end and ensure lasting peace.”

Zelenskyy’s comments appeared aimed at securing continued U.S. support for Ukraine, amid speculation that the incoming Trump administration might seek to reduce or redirect aid. While Trump has been critical of prolonged U.S. military involvement abroad, he has also vowed to bring a swift resolution to the conflict. Zelenskyy’s appeal seemed to align with Trump’s stated goal of “stopping the madness.”

He reiterated the importance of international cooperation, urging nations worldwide to back Ukraine. “The unity of America, Europe, and everyone in the world who values security is essential to achieving peace,” he said. His comments highlighted the critical role of U.S. leadership and the need for a unified front against Russian aggression.

The Ukrainian president also reaffirmed his stance that any peace agreement must include a full restoration of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including regaining territory annexed by Russia over a decade ago. “Turning a blind eye to occupation is not an option,” he stated, emphasizing that peace must be achieved on terms favorable to Ukraine.

The upcoming year could prove pivotal for the conflict. Trump has promised to bring peace to the region quickly, although details of his approach remain unclear. During the U.S. election campaign, Trump hinted at an “immediate ceasefire” but has kept specifics of his strategy under wraps.

Meanwhile, international leaders are beginning to outline potential pathways to peace. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently suggested that peace negotiations could start within months, coinciding with Poland’s presidency of the European Council.

Tusk remarked, “Our presidency will have, among others, joint responsibility for the shape of the political landscape, for what the situation will look like probably during the negotiations that, perhaps – there are still question marks here – will begin in the winter of this year.”

As Ukraine braces for what could be a decisive chapter in its struggle against Russia, Zelenskyy’s outreach to Trump reflects the importance of U.S. support in shaping the outcome of the war. With both leaders emphasizing the need for action, 2025 may mark a turning point in the pursuit of peace and stability in the region.
