The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is saddened to report the death of another Florida panther due to a vehicle collision.

The remains of a 7- to 8-month-old male panther were recovered on December 4th on Loblolly Bay Road SW in Glades County. This unfortunate incident marks another loss for the endangered species, highlighting the ongoing threat of vehicle collisions to panther survival.

The FWC emphasizes the importance of driver awareness and caution, particularly in panther zones where these animals are known to cross roads. These zones, located in several South Florida counties, have reduced speed limits to help protect both panthers and motorists.

“Vehicle collisions are the primary cause of death for Florida panthers. The FWC encourages motorists to slow down and observe all posted speed limits, especially in panther zones, which are in place in several counties across South Florida and coincide with areas where panthers are known to cross,” said the FWC. “These panther speed zones help ensure the survival of the endangered Florida panther and protect motorists from personal injury.”

The FWC encourages the public to report any sightings of injured, sick, or dead panthers to the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922). Prompt reporting allows biologists to respond quickly and gather valuable information from panther remains.

Florida residents can also support panther conservation efforts by purchasing a “Protect the Panther” license plate. Fees from these license plate sales provide crucial funding for FWC’s research and management of this iconic species.
