BRANDON, Fla. – A woman accidentally fired a handgun in her purse Saturday at Brandon Town Center Mall, prompting a police response and calls for an active shooter.

On Saturday, August 5, 2023, just after 3:30 p.m., the Communications Center began receiving multiple calls of a possible shooting at the Brandon Town Center Mall. 

Once on scene, deputies reviewed surveillance footage and discovered a woman had reached for something in her purse, and it appears she accidentally fired a gun in her bag.

“At this time, we have not located anyone that has been injured in this isolated incident. At no time was this an active shooter situation,” said HCSO.

“Every day, our deputies put their lives on the line to protect our communities and today was no different,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Our agency’s dedication and swift response to this incident demonstrates our commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens.”
