Something odd is happening.
Confronted over reportedly being anti-vax and for posting a Tucker Carlson clip on social media, music performer Nicki Minaj doxxed the reporters who stalked her and proclaimed, “Don’t tell me I can’t agree with a Republican.”
On “The View,” Whoopi Goldberg declared that it’s “outrageous” to attack the “1-percenters” because that includes people who make as little, so to speak, as $500,000 a year, and critics don’t know their circumstances, such as they could be supporting elderly parents.
On HBO, Bill Maher has griped about Cancel Culture, slapped the left’s obsession with race as being divisive, and answered “tax the rich” by pointing out it’s a “lie” to say the wealthy don’t pay taxes.
On NBC, “Meet the Press” anchor Chuck Todd noted that President Joe Biden has a “big credibility crisis,” and observes that multiple issues – the border crisis, Afghanistan, the COVID vaccines needing booster shots – “showed up after he said something basically the exact opposite,” and got worse.
Meanwhile, they don’t touch on other issues, such as rising rates of violent crime that occur as liberal politicians go soft on criminals, and inflation and an economy that sputters because we’ve made it easy for people to not work, or scared them into avoiding it, and the proclivities of sexual politics.
What seems to be happening, in short, is that some hardcore, woke liberals are waking up to the fact that the country is a mess just eight months after we allegedly elected its savior – and that the ideas they have promoted to fix our problems and right our wrongs are not going as planned, and arguably making things worse, as they become a reality.
Meanwhile, the problems we face are so big, so intractable, and coming so far into Biden’s term that there’s no way to hide them or to not blame him for what is happening.
After all, the last guy has been gone for months, and the current president has worked to gut or overturn almost everything he accomplished.
Conservatives should not be fooled.
Just because Whoopi doesn’t want to pay higher taxes, or Maher thinks it’s segregating to play the “Black National Anthem” before NFL games, or Minaj claps for a Fox News monologue doesn’t make them converts to the right, or even friends of conservatives.
Maher even said as much.
“I’m not going to give up on being liberal,” he said on his broadcast recently.
But, he added, “When people say to me sometimes, like, ‘Boy, you really go after the left these days. Why?’ Because you’re embarrassing me … Because you’re inverting things!”
And so, perhaps, what we’re seeing is that at least some of the left have grown suspicious or tired of the bossiness, short-sightedness, and vindictiveness of left-wing ideology. Conservatives should hope that more of them will have their eyes opened – if the country can survive that long.
