A heated conflict is brewing between the White House and retail giant Amazon, following reports that the online marketplace intends to display the cost of tariffs enacted alongside the prices of goods sold on its platform.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, during a press briefing Tuesday, labeled the reported move by Amazon as a “hostile and political act.” Her comments came shortly after news of Amazon’s alleged plans began circulating.

“This is a hostile and political act by Amazon,” Leavitt asserted, highlighting the administration’s strong disapproval.

Shares of the retail giant, founded by Jeff Bezos, reportedly dropped in premarket trading following these remarks.

According to reports, Amazon intends to show consumers a breakdown of how much the tariffs implemented under the Trump administration contribute to the final price of various products.

This, proponents of the move suggest, would provide a transparent illustration of the economic impact of those trade policies, demonstrating that American consumers ultimately bear the cost.

“Why didn’t Amazon do this when the Biden Administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?” blasted Leavitt.

“So this is another reason why Americans should buy American. It’s another reason why we are onshoring critical supply chains here at home to shore up our own critical supply chain and boost our own manufacturing here,” added Leavitt.

Amazon has not yet issued a statement in response to the White House’s position on Tuesday. The potential implementation of such a price display could spark further debate about the economic consequences of trade policies and inflation.
