Weller: Hormone Blockers Banned For Children In England

In a stunning announcement that is sure to cause a number of controversies in the UK and elsewhere, the National Health Service of England will no longer support prescribing puberty blockers for children with gender “dysphoria.” According to the Guardian, NHS England further stated that, “There is not enough evidence about either how safe they are to take or whether they are clinically effective to justify prescribing them to children and young people who are transitioning.”

The Executive Director of Sex Matters Maya Forstater responded in the Guardian:

“The significance of NHS England’s statement that there is not enough evidence to support the safety or clinical effectiveness of puberty blockers cannot be overstated, given the success that activist lobby groups have had in portraying them as a harmless and reversible treatment.”

This landmark decision comes on the heels of devastating investigative reporting by Public News, which has shown that the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) has been misrepresenting the scientific and medical support for their recommended therapies, including the blockers and genitalia-removing surgeries.

The WPATH, which is relied on by thousands of doctors around the world, including the American Medical Association (AMA), the Endocrine Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics, has been shown in videos and internal documents to recognize that, “its members (the doctors) know they are creating victims and not getting informed consent.” In the Public News reporting, you’ll find these videos and internal documents – Michael Shellenberger and team strike again with fantastic reporting! – that concludes:

The WPATH Files prove that gender medicine is comprised of unregulated and pseudoscientific experiments on children, adolescents, and vulnerable adults and will go down as one of the worst medical scandals in history.

I strongly encourage any interested party – especially proponents of so-called “gender affirming care” – to go read the WPATH files and decide for yourself the truth of the matter. You will be shocked at the evidence, which includes discussions of continuing a 16-year old’s hormone blockers despite the fact she has developed liver cancer in response to the regimen (cancer is a known side effect of these puberty blockers). There are discussions of the serious mental illnesses of some of the patients and ethical concerns that should haunt these practitioners if they indeed have souls.

The sense of using these blockers (which are also used to chemically castrate sex offenders in some jurisdictions) to irreversibly affect vulnerable, impressionable children was always a problem. Young children especially, and many who are victims of the increasing mental health issues caused by social media platforms and long-term lockdowns during the pandemic, are susceptible to suggestions, especially from so-called experts. Matt Walsh’s tongue-in-cheek documentary “What Is A Woman,” underlined the clear vacuousness of many of these experts – they were seen to fold like possums when faced with simple questions of criticism.

None could say what a woman was. This problem was made infamous in the Senate confirmation hearings for now-Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson who famously replied to the question “What is a woman,” with, “I’m not a biologist.”

Of course, the vital aspect missing from almost every discussion of the issues of gender dysphoria in young people is not science (though there’s a stunning lack of scientific support for almost all of the treatments currently being implemented) but common sense. Any living, thinking mouth breather understands that children should not be making these decisions on their own, and that parents, ever since there were parents, need to make these decisions on behalf of their vulnerable, developing offspring. The seriousness of the discussions being had with these kids are too much for a kid to handle, and may be causing permanent damage to their psyches. Our children’s inability to wrestle with these deep emotions in their undeveloped minds compounds the problem rather than solving it. Just ask Abigail Shrier, who in her new book “Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren’t Growing Up,” makes the case that the generation which has received more therapy than any children in the history of the world are doing worse, not better.

It is part of a broader theme – the effort to force children into adulthood early has had the opposite effect – it slows their development and creates perverse outcomes. The gender dysphoria of our youth is part of that equation. In the last ten years, our children have become more depressed, more suicidal and more confused about their genders than what should be conceivable.

We have lost our path in many ways when it comes to rearing our children. Today, the House of Representatives will vote on a bill to ban TikTok (which incidentally has many more provisions in it to empower the government to shut down websites and censor speech). While the alleged harm to children of the popular app has been discussed ad nauseam, the simplest and most effective solution – inform parents of the dangers and risks and leave it to them to make these choices for their children – has received short shrift. Yet another way the government wants to take more control of our lives and raise of our children. None of it is good.
