RUSKIN, Fla. – The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County (DOH-Hillsborough) has issued a water quality advisory for Bahia Beach, located at 2513 W Shell Point Rd. in Ruskin. This advisory comes after recent testing revealed elevated levels of Enterococcus bacteria that exceed the state’s recreational water quality criteria.

Samples taken on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, indicated that the bacteria levels at Bahia Beach pose an increased risk of illness to swimmers and others engaging in water-related activities. As a result, DOH-Hillsborough is strongly advising the public to avoid contact with the water at this location until further notice.

Enterococcus bacteria are commonly found in the intestinal tracts of humans and animals. While not harmful themselves, their presence in high numbers can indicate fecal contamination, which may also contain other disease-causing microorganisms. Exposure to water with elevated levels of these bacteria can lead to infections and illnesses.

The water quality advisory will remain in effect until subsequent testing demonstrates that bacteria levels have fallen below the accepted health standard. The Florida Department of Health conducts regular water quality monitoring at various recreational beaches throughout the state to ensure public safety.
