A Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy sprang into action Tuesday night, rescuing a 5-year-old boy with autism who had wandered from his home and into a nearby pond.
Deputy Wes Brough responded to a call on Valmont Lane around 7:30 p.m. The child’s father reported the boy had slipped out through a second-story door, triggering an alarm. Despite the family’s immediate search efforts and assistance from neighbors, the child remained missing.

Knowing the child’s affinity for water, deputies focused their search on nearby bodies of water. Deputy Brough heard a noise around 7:48 p.m. and spotted the boy clinging to a log in a pond.
The child was medically evaluated and found to be unharmed, much to the relief of his family.
Hats off to Deputy Wes Brough from TFP!
