A Florida scout leader accused of molesting a 14-year-old girl was arrested Thursday following an investigation by law enforcement.

Deputies say, Vidal Torres Jr., 48, of Daytona Beach, was a friend of the victim’s family and an Assistant Scoutmaster in her Scout BSA troop.

The family learned Torres had sexual contact with the victim and contacted the Sheriff’s Office in mid-November. An investigation confirmed the allegations, and Volusia Sheriff’s Office detectives obtained a warrant for Torres’ arrest on 4 counts of lewd or lascivious molestation and 1 count of unlawful use of a 2-way communication device.

When detectives attempted to arrest Torres at his place of employment, they learned he had left for at least a week on a “family emergency.”

Detectives were able to determine his location and arrest him a few days later, when he returned to the Daytona Beach area.

Torres was taken into custody without incident, and he confessed during an interview with detectives. It was determined the incidents of abuse did not occur at sanctioned Scout events.
