A harrowing incident unfolded in Buffalo, New York, where a police officer narrowly escaped severe injury or death after being dragged by a fleeing vehicle at high speeds.

The incident began as a routine traffic stop for speeding and tinted windows. Officers also noticed a young child unrestrained in the front passenger seat. However, the situation escalated when the driver, later identified as Dae’von Roberts, suddenly fled the scene with the child still inside, dragging an officer who was clinging to the vehicle’s door.

Body camera footage released by the Buffalo Police Department shows the officer desperately pleading with Roberts to stop, fearing for his life as the vehicle reached speeds exceeding 60 miles per hour. The officer attempted to apply the brakes while Roberts tried to kick him off the car.

Eventually, the officer managed to draw his weapon and fire multiple shots, striking Roberts. The vehicle came to a stop a short distance away, and the officer was able to rescue the child unharmed. Roberts was transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia expressed his horror upon viewing the body camera footage, stating, “That officer could have been severely injured or killed had it turned out any other way.” He commended the officer’s bravery and quick thinking in a life-threatening situation.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a loaded handgun under the driver’s seat. The incident is currently under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office.
