Democratic Representative Gerry Connolly of Virginia announced Monday that he will not seek reelection and will step down from his position as the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, citing a recurrence of esophageal cancer.

Connolly, 74, revealed his diagnosis six months ago and, despite initial positive results from treatment, stated that the cancer has returned.

“When I announced my diagnosis six months ago, I promised transparency,” Connolly wrote in a statement posted on X. “After grueling treatment, we’ve learned that the cancer, while initially beaten back, has now returned. I’ll do everything possible to continue to represent you and thank you for your grace.”

The announcement signals the end of a long career in public service for Connolly, who has represented Virginia’s 11th congressional district since 2009. “The sun is setting on my time in public service, and this will be my last term in Congress,” he added.

Connolly’s decision also creates a leadership vacuum on the powerful House Oversight Committee. He had secured the ranking member position in January, defeating New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in what was widely seen as a generational clash within the Democratic Party.

The question of who will succeed Connolly as the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee remains unanswered.

Ocasio-Cortez, who challenged Connolly for the position, is no longer a member of the committee. Prominent Democrats currently serving on the panel include Representatives Jasmine Crockett of Texas, Robert Garcia of California, and Ro Khanna of California.

The news of Connolly’s retirement has prompted an outpouring of support from colleagues and constituents alike, who have praised his dedication and service. The congressman has pledged to continue serving his district to the best of his ability during his remaining time in office.
