US Marshals: Ohio Police Officer Wounded In Shootout With Armed Fugitive

A fugitive wanted on federal weapons charges was killed in a shootout with law enforcement officers at an Ohio hotel Tuesday afternoon. One officer was wounded but is expected to recover.

Members of the U.S. Marshals-led Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF) attempted to arrest the fugitive at a hotel on Sunset Strip Avenue NW. The fugitive, whose name has not been released, barricaded himself inside a room and refused to surrender.

Canton Regional SWAT was called to the scene. During the standoff, the fugitive fired multiple rounds at officers, striking one SWAT team member. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital. Another bullet struck a law enforcement vehicle.

Officers returned fire, fatally wounding the fugitive. Two firearms and spent shell casings were found inside the hotel room.

U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott stated, “Today, this fugitive with an extensive violent criminal history dating back to the 1970’s attempted to kill officers on scene during the arrest. Unfortunately, one officer was shot but all officers on scene responded with professionalism, commitment and dedication to safely resolve the situation.
