The United States Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced today the imposition of new sanctions targeting Iran’s chemical weapons research and development capabilities. This action is a direct response to Iran’s continued violation of international norms and its ongoing efforts to develop and proliferate chemical weapons.

The sanctions target key Iranian entities and individuals involved in the research, development, production, and procurement of chemical weapons-related materials and technologies. The designated entities include research institutes, chemical companies, and procurement networks that have been instrumental in advancing Iran’s illicit chemical weapons program.

In a statement released today, the Treasury Department emphasized that these sanctions are not intended to punish the Iranian people but rather to hold the Iranian regime accountable for its dangerous and destabilizing activities.

The U.S. government remains committed to using all available tools, including sanctions, to counter the threat posed by Iran’s chemical weapons program.

The new sanctions will significantly impact Iran’s ability to access international financial markets and conduct business with foreign entities. The designated entities and individuals will be blocked from accessing the U.S. financial system and will be subject to asset freezes and other restrictions.

The United States urges the international community to join in condemning Iran’s continued pursuit of chemical weapons and to take steps to prevent the regime from acquiring the materials and technologies necessary to produce these deadly weapons.

According to the statement, the U.S. government will continue to work closely with its allies and partners to address the threat posed by Iran’s chemical weapons program and to ensure that the regime is held accountable for its actions.
