U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that the Trump administration might discontinue its efforts to achieve a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine without significant progress soon. The White House has worked for months to resolve the conflict but has not yet succeeded in finding a solution.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered his remarks in Paris following critical negotiations among U.S., Ukrainian, and European officials that resulted in initial steps toward peace. According to Rubio, the upcoming London meeting next week will be crucial to deciding whether the United States should continue its participation.

Rubio told reporters they must determine whether their current goal remains a feasible objective.

“I think it’s important to remind everybody that the Ukraine war is a terrible thing, but it’s not our war,” said Rubio. “We didn’t start it. The United States has been helping Ukraine for the last three years, and we want it to end. But it’s not our war.”

He confirmed that the administration will make its decision within a few days, as it prioritizes other matters.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has regularly alerted the world about Russian President Putin’s plans to enlarge Russian territory and weaken Western defense partnerships. Zelenskyy stated that Russia views Ukraine as its satellite state during an interview while also predicting that Russian aggression would spread across Europe.

Zelenskyy voiced concerns about Putin’s objectives during his latest interview with “60 Minutes,” explaining that Putin aims to restore the Russian empire by reclaiming territories that NATO currently protects.

Officials announced a nearly complete deal between the U.S. and Ukraine that will allow American access to Ukraine’s substantial mineral reserves, which remains connected to President Trump’s peace initiatives.

President Trump revealed on Thursday that the U.S. and Ukraine reached an agreement on mineral resources, with Ukraine’s Economy Minister confirming the signing of a memorandum of intent. The agreement, executed by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, aims to promote major investments while modernizing infrastructure.

Rubio, alongside presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, played a key role in guiding U.S. peace initiatives as Witkoff engaged in several discussions with Putin.

Diplomatic discussions have taken place in Saudi Arabia as part of these peace efforts.

Moscow refuses to agree to a full ceasefire because it wants Ukraine to stop its recruitment of troops and terminate Western military assistance, while Ukraine continues to dismiss these demands.
