Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was no Republican. But contemporary Democrats seem intent on making MLK a conservative icon.
King braved the mob, and even went to his grave from an assassin’s bullet, demanding equal treatment for black Americans – but equal opportunity and social judgment based on “the content of their character,” not solely because of the pigmentation of their skin.
Today’s Democrats have abandoned that.
As one example, we have Joe Biden, who pledged a year ago to name a black woman as his vice presidential candidate if he was nominated.
Biden essentially promised to exclude 93 percent of the population in picking his running mate, regardless of experience, achievement, or merit.
More recently, California Gov. Gavin Newsom promised to name a black woman to the U.S. Senate, if current Sen. Dianne Feinstein opts to retire.
Now, two Asian-American Democrats have picked up the theme.
On Tuesday, Sens. Tammy Duckworth, of Illinois, and Mazie Hirono, of Hawaii, pledged to reject any Biden nominees for senior-level posts who were “non-diversity” – in other words, white.
Duckworth stated that she would not apply her criteria to LGBT community.
So, for Duckworth and Hirono, the message was for Biden’s picks was that if you’re white and straight, get comfortable at the back of the bus.
Duckworth claimed she aired her demands after Biden’s staff suggested that “you don’t need anybody else” because of Vice President Kamala Harris. She said she considered that insulting.
But the Washington Free Beacon reported on Wednesday that Duckworth and Hirono’s protest was short-lived. They ended it later Tuesday night after just eight hours.
The pair claimed, the Free Beacon noted, that the “White House had satisfied their demands about a lack of Asian-American diversity” in Biden’s cabinet.
Duckworth issued a statement saying the senators received from the White House “assurances that it will do much more to elevate AAPI (Asian-American, Pacific Islander) voices and perspectives at the highest levels of government,” and that Biden’s team conceded on “appointing an AAPI senior White House official.”
Time will tell whether the senators get satisfaction from Biden.
But the incident underscores the fact that contemporary Democrats believe that merit is meritless, that “racism” can only be addressed with more racism, and that if it weren’t for identity politics, they’d have no politics at all.
