The commander of the strategically important Pituffik Space Base in Greenland was relieved of her command on Thursday, a U.S. Space Force spokesperson confirmed. The removal of Col. Susannah Meyers comes just two weeks after a high-profile visit to the Arctic installation by Vice President JD Vance.
The command change followed shortly after reports surfaced that Col. Meyers had addressed base personnel via email regarding remarks made by the Vice President during his visit.
Military.com first reported on Thursday that Meyers had sent a message attempting to distance her command from comments made by Vance. The Department of Defense subsequently confirmed that Meyers was the author of the email in question.

The specific content of Vice President Vance’s remarks during his visit and the exact nature of Col. Meyers’ comments in her email have not been publicly disclosed.
Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base, is the U.S. military’s northernmost installation and plays a critical role in missile warning, space surveillance, and satellite command and control.
The removal occurred amid the backdrop of President Donald Trump’s administration, which had previously expressed interest in the U.S. acquiring the semi-autonomous Danish territory of Greenland. Vice President Vance’s visit two weeks prior underscored the base’s strategic significance in the Arctic region.

The Space Force did not provide an official reason for Col. Meyers’ removal. Details regarding interim command arrangements or a permanent replacement have not yet been announced. The Department of Defense and the Vice President’s office have not offered further comment on the content of the remarks or the subsequent email at this time.
