March 18th, 2022. Just after 1045 hrs. Tampa Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to a reported 50-ish y/o male found unconscious and unresponsive in his apartment unit on the 2nd floor of the Oaks at Riverview Apartments, located in the 7500 Block of N. Florida Ave. As crews treated the patient and were removing him from the building, responders encountered a heavy odor of exhaust in the immediate area. A haz-mat response was requested as crews re-entered the apartment to search for possible other patients. A generator was found in operation inside of one of the units on the 1st floor of the 3 story building. An additional generator was found in operation on the opened balcony

Two Transported To Hospital, One In Critical Condition After Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

TAMPA, FL. – On Friday, around 10:45 am, Tampa Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to a reported man in his 50’s found unconscious and unresponsive in his apartment unit on the 2nd floor of the Oaks at Riverview Apartments, located in the 7500 Block of N. Florida Ave.

As crews treated the patient and were removing him from the building, responders encountered a heavy odor of exhaust in the immediate area.

A Haz-Mat response was requested as crews re-entered the apartment to search for possible other patients. A generator was found in operation inside of one of the units on the 1st floor of the 3 story building.

An additional generator was found in operation on the opened balcony of a unit on the 3rd floor. Haz-mat crews arrived and metered the building finding high levels of carbon monoxide present. In total, 12 units were effected, searched, and evacuated.

In total, 2 patients were transported by the Rescue unit to a local hospital. 1 patient is in critical condition, the second is in stable condition. 3 other tenants of the building were assessed for symptoms of carbon monoxide, but refused treatment or transport.

The building was ventilated floor by floor and unit by unit until there were no carbon monoxide readings present. A Tampa Fire Marshal inspector was requested to the scene.

The building has been cleared and released back to property management.
