MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – Two Miami-Dade County men are facing legal consequences after being caught with undersized mangrove snapper in Key Largo.

On Sunday afternoon, Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Tony Conde was conducting resource checks near Mile Marker 103 when he encountered Carlos Armendariz Montero, 26, and Joaquin Cordero Figueredo, 61, in possession of two mangrove snapper that were smaller than the legal size limit.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) regulations require mangrove snapper to be at least 10 inches in length to be legally harvested. Neither of the men had a measuring device to determine the size of their catch.

Both men were issued mandatory notices to appear in court for violating fishing regulations.

This incident serves as a reminder to anglers to be aware of and comply with size limits and other fishing regulations. Possessing undersized fish can negatively impact fish populations and the overall health of the marine ecosystem.
