Two Florida teachers have been arrested after a night of drinking led them into the wrong apartment and ultimately shots were fired at the resident, who was hit twice with gunfire.
According to deputies, the shooting happened at the Preserves of Oslo located in 2300 block 10th Rd. SW, Vero Beach.
On October 10th, Darius Cohen and Akkua Hallback, who are both elementary school physical education teachers, entered the wrong apartment.
Hallback mistakenly climbed into bed with the man, his wife, and their baby, and the other teacher went to the bathroom before the male occupant of the house escorted them out.
The teachers both believed they had entered the apartment of one of their friends.
Deputies say that once outside, Cohen and the male resident got into a “scuffle”. Hallback broke up the fight and the resident victim started to return to his home.
Cohen then fired four shots at the man, striking him twice in the back. Investigators say the man’s injuries are not life-threatening.
Both teachers have been fired from their jobs at Sebastian Elementary School and Indian River Academy.
“I immediately exercised my authority to terminate them last week,” David Moore, the school district superintendent, told the television station WPBF.
Cohen admitted to detectives that he fired the shots, the arrest affidavit said. Cohen, 26, is facing a charge of attempted felony murder.
Hallback, 27, is facing a charge of possession of a controlled substance. Court records showed no attorney listed for him.
Detectives say the two teachers were roommates.
