President-elect Donald Trump has named Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman and 2020 presidential candidate, as his choice for Director of National Intelligence (DNI). The selection continues Trump’s trend of appointing non-traditional candidates and loyal supporters to key positions in his incoming administration.
“As a former Candidate for the Democrat Presidential Nomination, she has broad support in both Parties – She is now a proud Republican!” Trump said in a statement. “I know Tulsi will bring the fearless spirit that has defined her illustrious career to our Intelligence Community, championing our Constitutional Rights, and securing Peace through Strength. Tulsi will make us all proud!”
Gabbard, who has served over 20 years in the Army National Guard with deployments to Iraq and Kuwait, brings a unique outsider perspective to the role. Her appointment marks a significant departure from the current Director of National Intelligence, Avril Haines, who had extensive experience in national security before her confirmation in 2021.
Gabbard’s nomination signals Trump’s intention to reshape the intelligence community with leaders aligned with his America First vision, prioritizing fresh perspectives over traditional career pathways in the intelligence field.
