President-elect Donald Trump has chosen South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as the next Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), according to two sources familiar with the decision.
Noem’s appointment aligns with Trump’s push to reinforce his hardline stance on immigration. The selection comes as Stephen Miller and Tom Homan, both known for their strict immigration policies, are set to take on senior roles in the administration.

By naming Noem, a staunch Trump ally, to head DHS, the president-elect is signaling his commitment to delivering on his immigration promises.
During Trump’s first term, the Department of Homeland Security faced significant upheaval, with five different leaders and only two securing Senate confirmation. The department, which manages a $60 billion budget and employs hundreds of thousands, plays a critical role in Trump’s domestic policy priorities.

As head of DHS, Noem will oversee a vast array of agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the U.S. Secret Service.
Her new role marks a significant step up from her previous experience as a U.S. Representative for South Dakota, positioning her to take charge of one of the most expansive and critical federal agencies.
