President-elect Donald Trump announced Thursday night that he plans to nominate North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum to serve as the next Secretary of the Department of the Interior. The formal announcement is expected Friday, but Trump gave a preview of his pick during a speech at the Mar-a-Lago Gala, praising Burgum’s leadership and vision for managing America’s natural resources.
“We have a big announcement tonight,” Trump teased. “I won’t say his name, but he’s got an incredible wife named Catherine. It might be someone like Burgum, Burgum, from North Dakota,” Trump said, hinting at the appointment. He lauded Burgum as the right choice to oversee federal lands, energy policy, and conservation efforts.

Trump’s decision to nominate Burgum signals his broader strategy to bolster domestic energy development and streamline the management of the country’s federal lands. “Doug is going to lead the Department of the Interior, and he’s going to do a fantastic job,” Trump added. “Congratulations to him and to Catherine.”
Trump’s Team Takes Shape with Key Appointments
Burgum’s expected nomination is part of a series of high-profile picks as Trump builds out his Cabinet. On Thursday, Trump also announced his intention to place two prominent attorneys from his recent New York legal battle in top positions at the Justice Department. Todd Blanche is set to become Deputy Attorney General, while Emil Bove will take on the role of Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General. Both are expected to play key roles in shaping Justice Department policy and overseeing major agencies.
Additionally, Trump confirmed plans to nominate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Kennedy, who initially launched a third-party presidential bid before endorsing Trump in August, is expected to focus on revitalizing federal health agencies and prioritizing transparency in tackling chronic health issues.
Trump’s selections reflect his commitment to assembling a team aligned with his vision for deregulation, energy independence, and a renewed focus on health and justice reform. The official announcements are set to take place in the coming days as Trump finalizes his Cabinet picks ahead of his January inauguration.
