President-elect Donald Trump has selected Florida Senator Marco Rubio as his nominee for Secretary of State, positioning a former rival who has become one of Trump’s strongest allies to take on the role of the nation’s top diplomat.
Rubio, a prominent conservative voice, is well-known for his hawkish stance on foreign policy, particularly toward China, Cuba, and Iran. He was a finalist for Trump’s running mate earlier this year, solidifying his close ties with the president-elect.
“He will be a strong Advocate for our Nation, a true friend to our Allies, and a fearless Warrior who will never back down to our adversaries,” Trump said of Rubio in a statement.

On Capitol Hill, Rubio serves as vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and is a key member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He has been vocal about taking a tougher stance against China, including pushing for action against social media app TikTok due to concerns about data access by its Chinese parent company.
“Leading the U.S. Department of State is a tremendous responsibility, and I am honored by the trust President Trump has placed in me,” said Rubio. “As Secretary of State, I will work every day to carry out his foreign policy agenda. Under the leadership of President Trump, we will deliver peace through strength and always put the interests of Americans and America above all else. I look forward to earning the support of my colleagues in the U.S. Senate so the President has his national security and foreign policy team in place when he takes office on January 20.”
The nomination marks a remarkable evolution in the relationship between Trump and Rubio, who were fierce competitors during the 2016 GOP presidential primary. At the time, Rubio openly criticized Trump, labeling him a “con artist” and “the most vulgar person to ever aspire to the presidency.” The clashes escalated, with Rubio mocking Trump’s hand size in a veiled reference to his manhood, while Trump branded him “Little Marco,” a nickname that stuck for years.
However, Rubio has since shifted his stance, becoming one of Trump’s most loyal defenders in the Senate. As speculation mounted about a potential cabinet role, Rubio downplayed past tensions, attributing their heated exchanges to the intensity of a hard-fought campaign.

Rubio’s selection as Secretary of State signals Trump’s confidence in his foreign policy acumen and his ability to take a hard line against America’s adversaries, aligning with the president-elect’s “America First” approach on the world stage.
