Trump Signals End To Tariff Pause, Hints At “Reasonable” Rates

President Donald Trump indicated on Friday that the 90-day pause on his reciprocal tariffs is unlikely to be extended, offering a glimpse into his administration’s approach to ongoing trade negotiations.

“I think I know pretty much, and again, we’ll have deals made but we’ll also make deals,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. “In other words, we’ll just set the tariff and we’ll be reasonable, very reasonable, and that’ll be the end. That’s the deal. We set the price.”

This statement marks a shift from the White House’s previous reluctance to provide specifics on the future of the tariff pause, which was implemented on April 9 after the initial announcement of new reciprocal tariff rates on April 2 triggered global market volatility.

The president’s April 2 announcement sent shockwaves through international markets, with the U.S. imposing tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese goods, prompting China to respond with tariffs of at least 125%. Following a flurry of requests for negotiations from over 100 countries, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the administration implemented the 90-day pause.

Previously, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt remained tight-lipped about the possibility of an extension.

When asked on Tuesday if proposals from other countries would be sufficient to warrant an extension, she replied, “Well look, ask me in July when the deadline hits. There’s a lot of time left and the president’s trade team is working, again, at Trump speed, as quickly as they can to ensure that these deals can be made.”
