Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon made the unexpected announcement Wednesday that she would be resigning from the government after eight years in the role.
In her announcement, made from her official residence in Edinburgh, Sturgeon stressed that her decision was not made due to “short-term issues” but rather that she had been “wrestling” with the move for several weeks.
“I could go on for another few months, six months, a year maybe, but I know as time passed, I would have less and less energy to give to the job,” Sturgeon said. “I owe it to the country to say it now.”
“I believe I have led this country closer to independence,” she said, adding that Scotland was “in the final phase” of achieving that goal.

On Wednesday, following Sturgeon’s announcement, former President Donald Trump lambasted the former Scottish leader.
“Good riddance to failed woke extremist Nicola Sturgeon of Scotland! This crazed leftist symbolizes everything wrong with identity politics,” Trump said Wednesday.
Trump continued, “Sturgeon thought it was OK to put a biological man in a women’s prison, and if that wasn’t bad enough, Sturgeon fought for a “Gender Recognition Reform Bill” that would have allowed 16-year-old children to change their gender without medical advice. I built the greatest Golf properties in the World in Scotland, but she fought me all the way, making my job much more difficult. The wonderful people of Scotland are much better off without Sturgeon in office!”
