President-elect Trump praised Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republicans for striking dubbed the “American Relief Act of 2024.”

House Republicans reached an agreement on a short-term government spending plan and a potential increase to the debt limit, GOP lawmakers announced Thursday following a meeting with Speaker Mike Johnson.

“There is an agreement,” said Rep. Stephanie Bice (R-Okla.) after the discussions. “The plan is to put a bill on the floor that we think is a reasonable step forward.”

The deal, which aims to avert a looming government shutdown, would keep the government funded temporarily while addressing the debt ceiling deadline. House leadership has been in contact with President-elect Donald Trump throughout the negotiations to secure his support, according to Bice.

Trump Endorses the Deal

President-elect Trump, a vocal critic of prior spending proposals, took to Truth Social to express his strong support for the agreement. “Speaker Mike Johnson and the House have come to a very good deal for the American People. The newly agreed-to American Relief Act of 2024 will keep the Government open, fund our Great Farmers and others, and provide relief for those severely impacted by the devastating hurricanes,” Trump wrote.

Trump also highlighted a key provision of the deal: an extension of the debt ceiling deadline to January 30, 2027. “Now we can Make America Great Again, very quickly, which is what the People gave us a mandate to accomplish,” he added, urging lawmakers from both parties to vote in favor of the bill.

House Republicans are pushing for a vote on the proposal as early as Thursday evening, aiming to secure passage before a potential government shutdown. If approved, the measure will head to the Senate for consideration.

The agreement represents a short-term fix to pressing fiscal challenges while setting the stage for further debates on government funding and the nation’s debt. Republican leaders are hopeful the plan will garner enough support to prevent a shutdown and address immediate needs, including disaster relief funding and aid to farmers.
