President-elect Donald Trump suggested he may consider a pardon for embattled New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who is currently facing federal corruption charges related to alleged illegal campaign contributions and foreign bribes.
Trump’s comments came during a recent interview where he expressed concerns over the way Adams has been treated, hinting that the charges may be unfair. “I think that he was treated pretty unfairly. Now, I haven’t seen the gravity of it all, but it seems…” Trump remarked, before likening the situation to being unexpectedly “upgraded in an airplane.”

The mayor is under federal investigation for allegedly accepting illegal donations and bribes from foreign nationals during his campaign. While Adams has denied any wrongdoing, the indictment marks a significant challenge for his administration.
Trump’s remarks signal a growing alignment between himself and Adams on key issues, particularly their criticisms of the legal system. Notably, Trump has previously voiced his belief that Adams became a target for speaking out against the influx of migrants to New York City. During a post-election dinner two months ago, Trump told Adams, “I told you if you open your mouth on immigration, they’re coming after you.”

This comes amid heightened scrutiny of young Americans and national sentiment. Adams recently spoke about a troubling trend he sees: youth becoming “radicalized to hate the America” that he believes gave them opportunity. His comments followed revelations surrounding a plot by Luigi Mangione, an Ivy League-educated individual from an affluent background, who allegedly planned to target United Healthcare’s CEO.
With Trump set to assume office in January, his willingness to entertain a pardon for Adams adds another layer of intrigue to the mayor’s legal battles. Meanwhile, Adams remains vocal on issues like immigration and radicalization, positions that appear to align him, at least in part, with the incoming administration.
