A new CBS News poll released on Sunday reveals that President Donald Trump has reached his highest approval rating across both of his terms, with 53% of voters approving of his leadership just weeks into his second term. The survey, conducted between February 5 and 7, highlights growing voter confidence in Trump’s ability to deliver on his campaign promises, particularly on issues like immigration, foreign affairs, and government efficiency.

The poll, which surveyed 2,175 U.S. adults, found that 70% of respondents believe Trump is sticking to the pledges he made during his campaign, regardless of whether they personally approve of his presidency. CBS News Elections and Surveys Executive Director Anthony Salvanto emphasized this point during an appearance on Face the Nation, hosted by Margaret Brennan.

“I will keep it simple, Margaret. He’s doing, in the eyes of the public, what he said he would do in the campaign. There’s political value in that. In fact, 70% of people say he’s doing what he promised. That’s whether they approve of him or not,” Salvanto said.

Salvanto also noted that Trump’s perceived traits—such as being tough, energetic, and focused—continue to resonate with voters. According to the poll, 69% described Trump as “tough,” 63% called him “energetic,” 60% said he is “focused,” and 58% described him as “effective.” These qualities, Salvanto explained, contribute to the public’s early impressions of Trump’s second term.

“There’s been a lot of activity. They’re getting that general sense of governance, and that’s being reflected in these early numbers. So that’s perception,” Salvanto added.

The survey also found that 49% of respondents believe Trump has done more than they expected in his first few weeks in office, while 41% said his performance matched their expectations. Only 9% felt he had done less than anticipated.

Mixed Reactions on Key Issues

While Trump’s approval ratings are strong overall, the poll revealed some areas of concern, particularly regarding the economy. A significant majority of respondents—66%—said the administration is not focusing enough on lowering the prices of goods and services. Only 31% believed the focus was adequate, and a mere 3% thought it was too much.

When asked about recent price changes, 47% of respondents said prices in general were increasing, while 41% said they were staying about the same. Specific concerns were raised about gas and egg prices, with 33% reporting higher gas costs and 63% noting increased egg prices.

Foreign Policy and the Israel-Hamas Conflict

Trump received positive marks for his handling of foreign policy, particularly the Israel-Hamas conflict. Fifty-four percent of respondents approved of his leadership on this issue, while 46% disapproved. The poll followed Trump’s recent meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which the president made headlines by suggesting the U.S. might “take over” the Gaza Strip to ensure peace for Palestinians.

Public opinion on this proposal was divided: 47% called the idea “bad,” 40% were unsure, and 13% believed it was a good idea. Notably, only 28% of respondents said they had read “a lot” about Trump’s comments on the issue, while 38% said they had read “some,” 23% said “not much,” and 11% said “nothing at all.”

Immigration and Law Enforcement

Trump’s hardline stance on immigration continues to garner support, with 59% of respondents approving of his efforts to deport criminal illegal immigrants. This policy aligns with one of his key campaign promises and remains a cornerstone of his administration’s agenda.

As Trump’s second term progresses, the CBS News poll suggests that his early actions are resonating with a significant portion of the American public. However, challenges remain, particularly in addressing economic concerns and navigating complex foreign policy issues.
