Former President Donald Trump has increased his lead over President Joe Biden following an assassination attempt, according to a Morning Consult poll released on Friday.
Trump now leads Biden by four points, garnering 46% support compared to Biden’s 42%. This surge comes just days after 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired shots at Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The four-point advantage marks Trump’s most prominent lead since February and is just one point shy of his record five-point lead over Biden in January.

Trump narrowly escaped certain death on June 13, sustaining a wound to his ear.
Tragically, the attack resulted in the death of 50-year-old volunteer fire chief Corey Comperatore and injuries to two other attendees.
This incident is the latest in a series of events that have shifted polls in Trump’s favor. Following Biden’s poor debate performance and Trump’s 34 felony convictions in a case brought by Manhattan Attorney Alvin Bragg, Trump’s support rose by five points, according to the poll.
The Bragg trial and the presidential debate have both contributed to a slew of unfavorable polls for Biden, enhancing Trump’s position as the election approaches.
Within the Republican Party, Trump’s favorability remains strong, with 91% of registered Republicans backing him. In contrast, Biden has the support of 85% of Democrats. More independents are leaning towards Trump, with 38% planning to vote for him compared to 32% for Biden.

Biden’s support within his own party waned after his first presidential debate, leading many prominent Democrats to call for his withdrawal from the race.
According to RealClearPolling averages, Trump maintains a steady lead in all seven battleground states, with a subtle uptick in polls following the assassination attempt on July 15.
In head-to-head matchups, Trump leads Biden in Georgia by an average of four points, North Carolina by 5.7 points, Pennsylvania by 4.5 points, Michigan by 1.7 points, Wisconsin by 3.3 points, Nevada by 5.1 points, and Arizona by six points.
The Morning Consult poll surveyed 9,414 registered voters from July 15 to July 17, with a margin of error of one percentage point.
