President Donald Trump signed an executive order today aimed at exposing what he calls wasteful spending by the federal government.

Titled “Radical Transparency About Wasteful Spending,” the memorandum directs the heads of executive departments and agencies to publicly disclose the complete details of every terminated program, canceled contract, terminated grant, and any other discontinued obligation of federal funds.

In the order, President Trump criticized longstanding practices where taxpayers’ dollars have subsidized projects and programs—both overseas and domestically—that he asserts do not serve the national interest.

“For too long, taxpayers have subsidized ideological projects overseas and domestic organizations engaged in actions that undermine the national interest,” the memorandum reads. “The American people have a right to see how the Federal Government has wasted their hard-earned wages.”

Key provisions of the executive order include:

  • Mandatory Disclosure: Agency heads must make public, to the maximum extent permitted by law, all details regarding discontinued federal programs, contracts, and grants.
  • Legal Compliance: The publication of these details must comply with applicable laws, regulations, and the terms of the underlying awards.
  • Promoting Administration Policies: The order is intended to support the policies of the Trump administration by ensuring that federal spending is transparent and accountable to taxpayers.

The administration argues that this measure will shed light on what it considers to be unnecessary and ideologically driven expenditures, and that greater transparency will empower the American people to hold the government accountable for its spending decisions.
