President Donald Trump unveiled a new trade policy on Thursday aimed at addressing global trade imbalances by imposing reciprocal tariffs on imports from other countries. The plan, which could escalate economic tensions with both allies and rivals, seeks to ensure that the U.S. charges the same tariffs on foreign goods as those countries charge on American exports.

During a signing ceremony at the White House, Trump said, “On trade, I have decided for fairness that I will charge a reciprocal tariff, meaning whatever countries charge the United States of America, we will charge them no more, no less. In other words, they charge us a tax or tariff, and we charge them the exact same tax or tariff. Very simple.”

Under the new policy, the U.S. will match the tariff rates imposed by other countries on American goods. For example, if a country charges a 15% tariff on U.S. automobiles, the U.S. will impose a 15% tariff on that country’s auto imports.

Trump emphasized that the policy is designed to level the playing field for American manufacturers and workers. “Nobody knows what that number is unless you go by the individual country,” he said. “You can see what it is if you go to the individual country and look at what they’re charging us. In almost all cases, they’re charging vastly more than we charge them. But those days are over.”

The Trump administration argues that the reciprocal tariffs will protect U.S. industries from unfair competition and reduce trade deficits. However, economists and trade experts warn that the policy could lead to higher costs for American consumers and businesses, as tariffs are often passed on in the form of increased prices for goods.

Critics also caution that the plan could provoke retaliatory measures from trading partners, potentially sparking a broader trade war.

Such a scenario could disrupt global supply chains, slow economic growth, and strain diplomatic relations with key allies and rivals alike.
