In a significant move to bolster U.S. energy independence and economic security, President Donald J. Trump has established the National Energy Dominance Council (NEDC).

Announced last week, the council will spearhead the administration’s efforts to lower energy prices, meet rising energy demands, and position the United States as a global energy leader for the 21st century.

The council will be led by Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and Secretary of Energy Chris Wright.

The NEDC aims to streamline energy production, reduce regulatory barriers, and promote an “all-of-the-above” energy strategy that includes oil, gas, nuclear, hydrogen, carbon capture, and renewable energy sources. The initiative has been widely praised by lawmakers, industry leaders, and labor unions, who see it as a critical step toward securing America’s energy future.

The creation of the NEDC reflects the Trump administration’s commitment to reversing what it describes as the failures of previous energy policies. By focusing on domestic energy production, the council seeks to reduce reliance on foreign energy sources, lower costs for consumers, and create millions of well-paying jobs.

House Committee on Energy and Commerce Chair Brett Guthrie (R-KY) applauded the move, stating, “Energy security is national security. By utilizing our domestic energy resources to create baseload power, we can lower prices, secure our grid, and provide the energy needed to grow manufacturing, heat our homes, and fill our gas tanks.”

The NEDC has garnered strong support from key industry stakeholders and labor organizations. The American Exploration and Production Council (AXPC) emphasized the importance of a coordinated government approach to energy policy, stating, “Our nation is stronger, more secure, and more prosperous when America is the world leader in energy production.”

North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) also welcomed the initiative, highlighting the critical role of skilled labor in building the nation’s energy infrastructure. “The men and women of the Building Trades have built the existing energy infrastructure of this nation and are eager to partner with this Council to advance America’s all-of-the-above energy strategy,” the organization said.

The NEDC comes at a pivotal moment as the U.S. faces increasing energy demands driven by technological advancements, including the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI). National Rural Electric Cooperative Association CEO Jim Matheson noted, “Electricity demand is skyrocketing, yet due to bad policy decisions, always-available baseload power is being forced to retire before it can be reliably replaced.”

The council’s focus on improving permitting processes and accelerating energy infrastructure development is seen as essential to meeting these challenges.

United Association of Union Plumbers and Pipefitters General President Mark McManus emphasized the need to cut red tape, stating, “We look forward to working with President Trump and the new National Energy Dominance Council to boost domestic production of critical energy like oil, gas, hydrogen, carbon capture, and nuclear.”

The NEDC’s mission aligns with President Trump’s broader vision of energy dominance, which prioritizes affordability, reliability, and innovation. Power The Future Executive Director Daniel Turner called the council a “long-overdue course correction” that will “prioritize American energy workers, revitalize domestic production, and ensure affordability for families.”

The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) also praised the initiative, with President Jay Timmons stating, “This action demonstrates President Trump and his administration’s commitment to ensuring manufacturers have the energy they need to drive economic growth. When manufacturing wins, America wins.”

While the NEDC focuses on expanding energy production, it also aims to balance environmental concerns with economic growth. Competitive Enterprise Institute Senior Fellow Marlo Lewis highlighted the importance of freeing reliable energy sources from regulatory constraints, noting that the council’s efforts will “lower energy prices, enhance U.S. economic security, create millions of new well-paying jobs, and strengthen U.S. competitiveness in advanced technologies such as AI.”

Growth Energy, a biofuels advocacy group, also expressed support, emphasizing the role of ethanol in reducing dependency on foreign imports and growing the economy.

The Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) welcomed the NEDC as a much-needed initiative to reduce regulatory burdens and promote energy abundance.

“A modern regulatory system and commitment to U.S. energy supremacy will generate quality jobs, economic vibrancy and growth, and innovations that will yield efficiencies and cleaner energy,” the council stated.
