Tropical Storm Ernesto is gaining strength and organization as it moves through the Caribbean. The storm’s center passed near Guadeloupe and Montserrat this morning and is currently south of St. Kitts and Nevis.
Ernesto is showing signs of developing an inner core, and maximum winds have increased to 45 knots. It is expected to become a hurricane within 24 hours, possibly even sooner.

The storm is currently moving west-northwest but is expected to turn northwest and then north, passing near or over the Virgin Islands this evening and then moving northeast and north of Puerto Rico overnight and on Wednesday.
Tropical storm conditions are expected to continue in portions of the Leeward Islands today and spread to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Hurricane conditions are possible on the Virgin Islands, Culebra, and Vieques. Heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding and mudslides.
Ernesto is likely to impact Bermuda late this week. Interests there should monitor the storm’s progress.

Forecast:
- Favorable conditions, including warm sea surface temperatures and light wind shear, are expected to contribute to further strengthening.
- The official forecast predicts Ernesto will become a hurricane within 24 hours and continue to strengthen as it moves north of Puerto Rico.
- The storm is also expected to grow in size over the western Atlantic.
