Tropical Storm Debby is intensifying over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico and is expected to become a hurricane before making landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region early Monday. The storm is projected to bring heavy rainfall, potentially causing significant flooding across northern Florida, southeast Georgia, and South Carolina.

Widespread flash and urban flooding are expected, with potentially historic rainfall in southeast Georgia and South Carolina. Significant river flooding is also anticipated.

Hurricane conditions are expected in the Florida Big Bend region on Monday, with tropical storm conditions starting tonight. Tropical storm conditions are also expected farther south, including the Tampa Bay area and Lower Florida Keys.

Life-threatening storm surge inundation is possible along the Gulf Coast from Aripeka to Indian Pass, with potential impacts extending south to Bonita Beach.

Storm surge and strong winds are possible in other parts of Florida and along the southeast U.S. coast through mid-week. Residents in these areas should remain vigilant and monitor the storm’s progress.

Debby is currently moving north-northwestward, gradually turning toward the Big Bend region due to a weakening ridge and an approaching trough. Warm Gulf waters and low wind shear are expected to fuel rapid intensification, with the storm potentially reaching hurricane strength by tonight.

After landfall, Debby is forecast to slow down and meander across northern Florida and southeastern Georgia, leading to a prolonged period of heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

The National Hurricane Center urges residents to prepare for the storm’s impacts and stay updated on the latest forecasts and advisories.
