HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – On Sunday at around 11:30 PM, a routine traffic stop for a bicycle safety violation escalated into a foot pursuit and subsequent drug arrest in Hernando County.
A Hernando County Sheriff’s Deputy observed a man, later identified as Christopher Charles Clay, riding a bicycle without a headlight in the wrong direction on Cortez Boulevard. Clay evaded the initial traffic stop, leading deputies on a chase through several commercial properties.

Deputies pursued Clay on foot, issuing verbal commands to stop. The pursuit ended at the Quality Inn parking lot, where Deputy J. Allion apprehended Clay.
A search of Clay’s belongings revealed methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and prescription medication without a valid prescription. Clay claimed the items weren’t his and that he was in the process of moving.
Clay was arrested and charged with Possession of Paraphernalia, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of a Harmful New Legend Drug without a Prescription, and Resisting Arrest without Violence. He is being held on a $7,500 bond.
