Former President Donald Trump had just taken the stage and was addressing a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, just two days before the Republican National Convention is set to nominate him as the party’s presidential candidate.
Amidst the roar of the crowd, a series of gunshots rang out, sending shockwaves through the event. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene as Trump ducked behind the podium, quickly covered by Secret Service agents before being escorted to transportation out the area and to a medical center.
Authorities identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old resident of Bethel Park, a town located approximately 40 miles south of the rally’s location.
Crooks had positioned himself on the roof of a nearby manufacturing plant, more than 130 yards away from the stage, armed with an AR-style rifle.

The attack left Trump injured, with a bullet piercing the upper part of his right ear. In addition, one spectator was killed, and two others were critically injured. The FBI’s Special Agent in Charge, Kevin Rojek, expressed surprise at Crooks’ ability to fire several shots, given the distance from the stage.
The US Secret Service, the agency responsible for protecting the former president, immediately implemented protective measures and launched an active investigation into the incident.

The motive behind Crooks’ actions remains unclear as authorities continue to investigate the incident.
