U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has introduced a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution aimed at imposing term limits on members of Congress. The measure seeks to limit U.S. Senators to two six-year terms and Members of the House of Representatives to three two-year terms following its enactment.
Sen. Cruz emphasized the importance of term limits in addressing long-standing issues in Washington, D.C.

“Term limits are critical to fixing what’s wrong with Washington,” Cruz said in a statement. “The Founding Fathers envisioned a government of citizen legislators who would serve for a few years and return home, not a government run by a small group of special interests and lifelong, permanently entrenched politicians. Term limits bring about long-overdue accountability. I urge my colleagues to advance this amendment to the states so that it may be quickly ratified and become a constitutional amendment.”
Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), who has proposed a companion amendment in the House of Representatives, echoed Cruz’s sentiments:
“Elected office should represent a short-term privilege of public service, not a career choice. Those of us in Congress ought to serve for a reasonable period of time and then return home to live under the laws we enacted. This effort will go a long way to positively impact American politics, and I appreciate Sen. Cruz’s leadership on this important issue.”

To become part of the Constitution, the proposed amendment must first secure a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and Senate before being sent to the states. It would then need ratification by three-fourths of state legislatures.
Proponents argue that imposing term limits is essential for reducing the influence of entrenched political interests and fostering accountability to the American people. Critics of the proposal, however, caution that such limits could weaken legislative experience and institutional knowledge in Congress.
The introduction of the amendment reflects growing calls for reform as many voters express frustration with perceived inefficiencies and dysfunction in Washington. If successful, the amendment could fundamentally reshape the structure and tenure of legislative service in the United States.
