U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has raised concerns over the Senate’s impending deadlines, which include the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), government funding, and the Farm Bill—all left unresolved until the last minute by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
With only 11 legislative days remaining in September, Cornyn emphasized the urgent need to address these critical issues before time runs out.

“This Democrat Senate is on a collision course with itself, and the Republicans have been ringing the alarm bell for months,” Cornyn stated. He urged prioritizing the NDAA, which has historically been the Senate’s top priority for over six decades. Delaying the bill, he argued, would be a disservice to the military personnel who risk their lives to ensure national safety.
Cornyn also highlighted the necessity of passing a government funding bill by the end of the month to avoid a government shutdown, a recurring issue that he called “predictable shutdown drama.”
The looming September 30 deadline to pass the Farm Bill was another point of concern. Cornyn referenced his recent trip to the Rio Grande Valley with Senator John Boozman, where they heard from farmers and ranchers about the importance of passing a timely and robust Farm Bill.

Cornyn criticized the Democratic-led Senate for inaction, turning what should be a methodical legislative process into an unnecessary sprint toward the end of the year. “Leaving this work until the end of the year and taking yet another break for the month of October so Democrats can campaign is not a way to govern,” he said, warning that the American public is growing weary of Washington’s dysfunction.
Cornyn expressed hope for new leadership in Congress following the upcoming November elections.
