As Vice President Kamala Harris prepares to visit Houston, Texas officials have expressed strong opposition to her handling of border security, blaming her policies for increased illegal immigration and related crime in Texas.
Governor Greg Abbott labeled Harris a “Border Czar in name only,” alleging her policies enabled criminal groups and contributed to violent incidents, including the recent murder of Jocelyn Nungaray, attributed to members of Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang.

“‘Border Czar’ Kamala Harris can come all the way to Houston where Jocelyn Nungaray was killed by Tren de Aragua gang members that she let into the country, yet she can’t be bothered to visit Jocelyn’s family or even say her name. Kamala Harris and her open border policies have allowed over 11 million illegal immigrants and dangerous criminals like TdA into our country, putting every American’s life at risk,” Abbott stated. “President Donald Trump has shown real leadership on the border, with successful border policies that decreased illegal immigration to the lowest level in decades. While Kamala Harris refuses to take real action on this crisis, Texas will continue to step up with our historic border mission until we have a partner in the White House to make America secure again.”
Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick echoed these sentiments, dismissing Harris’ visit as a “futile campaign move” and predicting that Texas voters will favor Trump. U.S. Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn emphasized the impact of federal immigration policies on Texas communities, with Cornyn specifically questioning Harris’ capacity to lead on border issues. “If she can’t control the border, how can she run the country?” Cornyn asked.

Attorney General Ken Paxton accused Harris and President Biden of dismantling Trump-era policies and using taxpayer money to settle migrants in American cities, while Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham claimed Harris’ policies have “the blood of Texans on her hands.” Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller highlighted concerns for missing migrant children, alleging that border mismanagement has led to human trafficking and exploitation.
Several U.S. Representatives, including Dan Crenshaw, Ronny Jackson, and Monica De La Cruz, voiced frustration over the Biden-Harris administration’s approach, pointing to issues such as increased drug trafficking and violent crime as outcomes of lenient border policies. Harris, who assumed border security responsibilities in 2021, is expected to address the topic during her Houston event, though Texas leaders remain critical.

While Harris’ visit aims to strengthen Democratic support, Texas officials are amplifying their calls for stricter border policies, with many officials pledging support for Trump in the upcoming election, claiming he will “restore order” to border security.
