A Texas man incarcerated at a federal prison in Florida has been sentenced to 25 years for attempting to murder a fellow inmate.
Shane McMillan, 51, was found guilty by a jury of assault with intent to commit murder and possession of a prohibited object by a federal inmate. The charges stem from a violent incident on July 9, 2023, at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County.

During the trial, evidence revealed that McMillan followed another inmate into a cell, closed the door, and brutally stabbed the victim approximately 10 times with a shank. The attack only ended when another inmate heard the commotion and intervened, allowing the victim to escape.
The victim sustained multiple stab wounds to his neck, chest, and torso and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. He has since recovered from his injuries.

In an interview with the FBI, McMillan confessed that he intended to kill the victim. This admission, along with witness testimony and evidence presented at trial, secured his conviction.
The FBI and the Federal Bureau of Prisons investigated the case. Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk Watson prosecuted the case.
