Texas man Jared James Dicus pleaded guilty on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, to the brutal murder of his wife, Anggy Diaz. In a plea agreement with the State, 506th District Court Judge Gary Chaney sentenced Dicus to 40 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Institutional Division.

The case involved potential mental health issues concerning Dicus’ competency to stand trial. Following a court-ordered examination, he was found competent.

As part of the plea agreement, Dicus waived his right to appeal the verdict, sentence, and any potential defenses, including an insanity defense. He also waived any post-conviction writs of habeas corpus.

Diaz and Dicus were married in October 2022, however, just months later, in January 2023, authorities responded to a gruesome scene at the couple’s home.

The two lived in a house behind Dicus’ parents’ residence. Deputies arriving at the scene found the home covered in blood, with Diaz decapitated and dismembered.

Dicus subsequently confessed to killing Diaz at their Oak Hollow home.

District Attorney Sean Whittmore discussed the 40-year sentence with the victim’s family before the plea and sentencing. Due to the aggravated nature of the offense, Dicus will not be eligible for parole until 2043, at the earliest.

The District Attorney’s Office emphasized that eligibility for parole does not guarantee it, as that decision rests with the Board of Pardons and Parole, a division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
