Democratic Texas Rep. Colin Allred, who is running against incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in November, is slated to give a keynote address to the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the Human Rights Campaign — a group that has embraced punishing parents for refusing to transition their children.
The Human Rights Campaign in 2023 condemned Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom for vetoing legislation that would have threatened to revoke custody from parents who refused to “affirm” their child’s decision to change their gender. Allred is held in high regard by the organization, which has given him a perfect score for his position on LGBT issues.

“We are honored to have U.S. Senate Candidate Congressman Colin Allred as our guest speaker,” the Dallas-Fort Worth Human Rights Campaign Facebook post announcing Allred’s speech reads. “Rep. Allred has been a persistent advocate for equality and will share his insights on the current political landscape and his plan to defeat Ted Cruz.”
The Human Rights Campaign’s Dallas-Fort Worth chapter is especially ardent in its belief that parents who oppose transgenderism should not have custody of their children. In 2019, the organization held a “Justice 4 Trans Kids” fundraiser aimed at raising $125,000 to prevent the father of a nine-year-old girl identifying as a male from taking custody of her.
The child’s mother, a social worker, claims that they “began identifying as a boy at age two and socially transitioned at age five.” The fundraiser featured drag queens and tacos.
“Of all the support that I receive from any group, there might not be any more that I’m more proud of than HRC because of its history, because of the broad focus of its membership and because of the critical importance of its mission,” Allred said at a 2019 Human Rights Campaign event. “We can’t go backwards in this country.”

The Human Rights Campaign has spent thousands supporting Allred’s House and Senate runs, both funding him directly and engaging in voter mobilization efforts on his behalf, according to campaign finance records.
The Dallas-Fort Worth Human Rights Campaign also supported legislation in Texas that would have allowed biological males who identify as female to compete in girls’ sports, according to social media posts. Allred has opposed legislation that would have banned biological men from women’s sports, calling them “harmful.”
The Cruz campaign has spent millions on ads attacking Allred for his position on allowing transgender individuals to compete in women’s sports, The Texan reported.
“The thrill of victory in women’s sports. The agony of defeat to biological men,” one of the ads states. “Now our girls are being left in the dust. Robbed of their right to compete fairly. And Colin Allred voted in Congress to oppose Texas state law that protects women’s sports.”

The race between Cruz and Allred is tight, with the former currently favored by a narrow margin.
Real Clear Polling had Cruz leading Allred by five points as of Oct. 1 based on its average of polls. A poll conducted by Morning Consult between Sept. 9 and Sept. 18, however, shows Allred beating Cruz by one point, which is within the survey’s margin of error, Newsweek reported.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has announced a multi-million dollar campaign targeting Cruz, alongside other Republican incumbents.
“Senate Democrats are expanding the map and going on offense,” DSCC Chair Gary Peters said in a Sept. 26 press release. “All cycle long the DSCC has been preparing to take advantage of Sens. Cruz and Scott’s damaged standings in their states — and now our efforts in Texas and Florida are accelerating.”
The Cruz and Allred campaigns did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for comment.
