Tennessee Rep. Burchett: Your Tax Dollars Are Funding The Taliban “They Will Hate Us For Free”

Tennessee Representative Tim Burchett (R) raised serious concerns Wednesday about U.S. taxpayer dollars being funneled to the Taliban in Afghanistan. In a foreign affairs hearing with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Burchett criticized what he described as a lack of oversight and accountability regarding funds sent to Afghanistan since the U.S. withdrawal in August 2021.

Rep. Burchett highlighted reports of Al-Qaeda fighters operating alongside the Taliban and questioned the Biden administration’s awareness of the situation. He referenced emerging claims that Hamza bin Laden, presumed dead in 2019, may now be alive and leading Al-Qaeda.

This revelation, coupled with concerns over the relationship between the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, and ISIS, underscores what Burchett sees as a deteriorating security situation in the region.

“The administration was clueless when I asked about these bases and operations,” Burchett said. “And when I pressed them on the payments to the Taliban, Blinken didn’t deny it. Instead, he tried to minimize it, calling it a small proportion of the funds we’re sending.”

According to Burchett, millions of dollars intended for humanitarian aid in Afghanistan are indirectly supporting the Taliban. He cited reports indicating that more than $10 million has been sent to Afghanistan, a sum he described as significant to his Tennessee constituents.

“Ten million dollars is a hell of a lot of money to people in Tennessee,” Burchett said. “It should be a lot of money to everybody up here, but apparently it isn’t. The Taliban will hate us for free; we don’t need to pay them.”

Reports from the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) and the World Bank detail how funds are transferred to Afghanistan for humanitarian purposes. However, critics argue that the Taliban-controlled Afghanistan Central Bank is managing these funds, enabling terrorist networks to access and misuse them.

The controversy follows the widely criticized withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan, during which $7 billion worth of military equipment was left behind. Burchett alleged that this equipment, coupled with subsequent financial transfers, has emboldened the Taliban and terrorist groups operating in the region.

“American taxpayers are unknowingly propping up a regime that oppresses women and harbors terrorists,” Burchett asserted in September. He also underscored the deteriorating human rights situation in Afghanistan, where the Taliban has imposed severe restrictions on women and minorities.

Burchett has called for an immediate halt to all payments that could benefit the Taliban and urged Congress to adopt stricter measures to ensure accountability. He also emphasized the need for bipartisan support to prevent further misuse of U.S. funds.

“Every penny going to the Taliban is a disgrace to the sacrifices made by our troops and Afghan allies,” Burchett said. “We need to honor their sacrifices by cutting off this funding and taking a stand against terrorism.”

Burchett’s comments come amid growing calls for greater scrutiny of U.S. foreign aid, particularly in conflict zones. While the Biden administration defends these payments as necessary for humanitarian efforts, critics like Burchett argue that the risks of misuse outweigh the benefits.

“We got to get away from this bunch as fast as possible. Anyway, Trump couldn’t get here fast enough,” Burchett said Wednesday.
