When a simple pizza delivery takes a tragic turn, it’s a stark reminder that split-second decisions can have devastating consequences.
The story of Ryan Babcock, a 32-year-old Tennessee resident, serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of exercising restraint and rational judgment, even in the face of perceived threats.
On the evening of Monday, April 29, 2024, an 18-year-old Domino’s delivery driver, Caiden Wheeler, was making his rounds in the quiet town of Ashland City, Tennessee.

Unbeknownst to him, his routine pizza drop-off was about to take a harrowing turn. As he pulled into a driveway to deliver his cargo, he found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Caiden later recounted to the authorities that he thought he had parked in the correct driveway, but as he stepped out of his vehicle, he was flagged down by a neighbor – Ryan Babcock.
According to the criminal complaint, Babcock told the officers that he and his wife had seen the truck pull into their driveway on the security footage. Assuming the worst, Babcock rushed outside, firearm in hand, and began firing at the unsuspecting delivery driver’s vehicle.
Caiden, caught in the crossfire, quickly retreated back to his truck and attempted to flee the scene. But Babcock, in a desperate attempt to “disable” the vehicle, continued to unleash a barrage of gunfire, striking the truck multiple times.
Miraculously, Caiden emerged unharmed, except for the three bullet holes that now marred his vehicle – one near the gas tank, another above the driver’s side window, and a third in the front driver’s side wheel and tire.
Authorities promptly arrived on the scene and arrested Babcock, charging him with aggravated assault. The 32-year-old, who had allegedly admitted to the officers that he had fired multiple shots at the delivery driver’s truck, was released on bail the following day.

Caiden, still shaken by the traumatic experience, expressed his belief that Babcock should have faced more severe charges, potentially even attempted murder. The teenager lamented, “I was literally about to get killed right there.”
In the wake of this incident, there have been calls for policy reforms and a renewed focus on community dialogue. Advocates have urged lawmakers to revisit self-defense laws and ensure that they strike a delicate balance between protecting the rights of individuals and safeguarding the broader public.
Additionally, there is a growing emphasis on the need for enhanced training and education programs for firearm owners, emphasizing the responsible and lawful use of deadly force. By empowering citizens with a deeper understanding of their rights and responsibilities, such initiatives could help prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
