TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. – Tarpon Spring Police arrested a man on Thursday after an altercation near the football field at Tarpon Springs High School.

On Thursday at approximately 2:40pm, The Tarpon Springs Police Department received a call of a possible assault in progress on the Football field at Tarpon Springs High School.

Upon arrival of officers they found a football coach restraining an adult male on the ground in the area of the football stadium.

Through investigation it was determined that a school football practice was occurring and one of the players (17 year old white male) was not participating, due to a past injury.

This student has been in the custody of his Aunt, on a temporary custody waiver awaiting a final court date, since July 20, 2023.

This student’s father began arguing and yelling at the student (his son).

At some point the football coach and other witnesses saw the father pulling on his son, with his hands around the child’s neck.

The coach left practice and approached the parent while informing him to stop touching the child.

The father at that point let go of the child and kicked the coach. The coach then attempted to restrain the parent by taking him to the ground and awaited police arrival.

The father’s name is not being released at this time, however he was charged with one count of Child Abuse. The football coach did not want to pursue any charges on the subject. This incident is still under investigation.
