POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A fatal head-on collision occurred on US 98 North at Earnest Road in Polk County early Saturday morning, resulting in the death of a 36-year-old Tampa man and a five-hour road closure.

The crash, reported around 3:16 am, involved a northbound semi-truck and a southbound 2020 Chevy Silverado.

Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide detectives determined that the Silverado driver attempted to pass another vehicle, entering the northbound lane and colliding head-on with the semi-truck.

The Tampa man driving the Silverado was killed instantly. The semi-truck driver and passenger, both from Orlando, were uninjured. Everyone involved was wearing seatbelts.

While no charges are expected, the investigation is ongoing.
