Tampa Man Indicted For Violating Wiretap Act, Computer Intrusion

TAMPA, Fla. – A Tampa man has been charged with conspiracy, unauthorized access of protected computers, and violations of the Wiretap Act.

If convicted on all counts, Timothy Burke, 45, Tampa, faces a maximum penalty of 62 years in federal prison.

According to the indictment, Burke and a second conspirator obtained and used compromised credentials, such as usernames and passwords, to obtain and steal information from the victim entities’ computers.

The victim entities’ computers were the “National Sports League” and “StreamCo.”

Regarding the actions connected to StreamCo, the indictment claims that Burke and Conspirator 2:

  • Gained access to a StreamCo website using compromised credentials
  • Took proprietary information from that website belonging to StreamCo, which they then used to intercept, download, and store StreamCo broadcaster-customers’ streams
  • Did all of the above using the stolen proprietary information.

According to the Department of Justice, two StreamCo broadcaster-customers who were impacted by the charged conduct are also named in the indictment.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Tampa Field Office – Cyber Squad.
