TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced on X Tuesday that Baker Mayfield, a former number one overall pick in the NFL Draft, has been named the team’s new starting quarterback by head coach Todd Bowles.
Mayfield is stepping into the role following the departure of Tom Brady, widely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
Baker Mayfield’s career statistics include 16,288 passing yards, 102 touchdowns, and 64 interceptions. Despite his individual achievements, his career record stands at 31-38 in 72 games played.
In the previous season, Mayfield played for multiple teams and threw for 2,163 yards, 10 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
With Mayfield taking over as the starting quarterback, Kyle Trask, a former second-round draft pick, will move to a backup role. Trask has yet to take over the starting position since being drafted by the Bucs and is unlikely to see significant playing time this season unless there’s an injury.
Some pundits predict that the Buccaneers could face challenges this season and might be in contention for a high draft pick in the following season.
