TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicked off the 2024 NFL season with a commanding 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at Raymond James Stadium.
The Bucs’ offense, led by quarterback Baker Mayfield, was in top form throughout the game. Mayfield connected with wide receiver Mike Evans for two key touchdowns, including a 91-yard drive in the fourth quarter that sealed the victory.
Chris Godwin consistently moved the chains with multiple crucial catches including a 24-yard screenplay and several third-down conversions. Godwin’s 35th career receiving touchdown Sunday broke a tie with Jimmie Giles for the second-most in Buccaneers history.
Running back Bucky Irving electrified the crowd with a 31-yard run, while Rachaad White added a 32-yard screen pass to the mix, helping Tampa Bay extend their lead.
The Buccaneers’ defense also played a significant role, with linebacker Lavonte David and SirVocea Dennis combining for a key sack, pushing Washington back on third-and-20.
Commanders’ quarterback Jayden Daniels managed two rushing touchdowns, but Tampa Bay’s defense held strong, limiting his passing effectiveness. Daniels’ efforts were overshadowed by Tampa Bay’s relentless pressure, including a sack by Joe Tryon-Shoyinka that resulted in a fumble recovery by Tyler Biadasz.
Despite a late surge from the Commanders, the Buccaneers’ offense proved too much, and Jayden Daniels’ final touchdown only narrowed the deficit. Tampa Bay’s defense thwarted further Washington advances, securing a decisive 37-20 victory to open the season.
Notable injuries included Buccaneers’ CB Zyon McCollum, who left the game with a concussion, and Bryce Hall, who was carted off the field with an ankle injury.
With a solid offense and defense performance, the Buccaneers look to build on this momentum as they head into Week 2.
