A surprising development at the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) is the participation of the Taliban.
The terrorist group, which took control of Afghanistan in 2021, is sending a delegation to the event. This marks the first time the Taliban has been involved in a UN climate conference.
The Taliban’s delegation aims to engage with other countries on climate issues and seek funding for climate-related projects in Afghanistan.

The Taliban, a group designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and many other countries, has a history of violence and human rights abuses.
Their rule in Afghanistan has led to increased restrictions on women’s rights, suppression of freedom of speech, and the resurgence of extremist ideologies.
The COP29 conference is expected to focus on critical issues such as climate finance, particularly for developing nations.
Taliban Atrocities: A Dark Chapter in Afghanistan’s History
The Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021 has led to a severe deterioration of human rights, particularly for women and minority groups. The group’s history is marked by violence, oppression, and disregard for international law.

Here are some of the most egregious atrocities committed by the Taliban:
- Brutal Enforcement of Sharia Law: The Taliban’s interpretation of Islamic law has led to harsh punishments, including public executions, amputations, and floggings. Women have been particularly targeted, with restrictions on education, employment, and freedom of movement.
- Targeted Killings and Violence: The Taliban has been accused of carrying out targeted killings of civilians, including journalists, human rights activists, and former government officials.
- Suppression of Free Speech and Media: The Taliban has imposed strict censorship on media outlets and journalists, leading to a significant decline in press freedom. Journalists have been harassed, detained, and even killed for their reporting.
- Humanitarian Crisis: The Taliban’s policies have contributed to a worsening humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. Millions of Afghans face poverty, hunger, and displacement. The collapse of the economy and the freezing of Afghan assets have exacerbated the situation.
The international community has condemned the Taliban’s human rights abuses and called for accountability. However, the group remains in power, and the future of Afghanistan remains uncertain.
